課程概述

This course is based on the good foundation established in the Fall 2009 semester. In this course, students use English to work together to produce presentations of English articles, interviews, debates and panel discussions on topics of their own choice.

While students are preparing their presentations at the beginning of the course, we will focus in class on learning about and doing exercises to develop important skills in English. These include:
the skills to work well in groups,
how to participate in and lead a discussion in English,
what to do when you don’t know the word you want to use in English,
how to improve your organization in English compositions,
how to work on an interview,
how to be part of a panel discussion,
and how to improve grammar

Students in this course will write three compositions this semester. Students will use the feedback on their writing to improve their skills through additional exercises.

This course is designed for students who are motivated towards achieving excellence in English, who are willing to make a consistent effort throughout the course and who want to enjoy communicating formally (presentations and compositions) in English.

課程要求
Students should bring a notebook, pen and folder to class so they can take notes and keep the class handouts together. On review days before the in-class compositions we will review each of the readings, discussions, interview or debates in depth, so be sure to bring your handouts.

Successful students in this class will be proactive in their study and participation approach. They will be in class and prepared to participate in class *before* the bell rings. According to the university policy, one hour of unexcused absence is equal to five hours of excused absence. (You need to fill out a form either before the class missed or within 3 days after the missed class.) For this 3 hour course, if you have 2.16 hours of unexcused absence or 10.8 hours of excused absence, your course grade will be lowered by 5% If you have 2.7 hours of unexcused absence or 13.5 hours of excused absence, your course grade will be lowered by 10% If you have 3.6 hours of unexcused absence or 18 hours of excused absence, you cannot pass the course. Students who leave class early (without a formal excuse) will be counted as having missed 3 hours of unexcused absence.

Successful students are proactive in their study approach by completing the reading assignment before class, preparing the answers to the discussion questions and having questions prepared to raise in the group discussion.

Successful students also proactive in their class participation by giving feedback to the presenters in class, especially when they cannot hear them clearly enough or when they are speaking too quickly.

In addition, successful students remember to be proactive in all aspects of our class. In such a large class it may be easy to get lazy and disappear among the other students. By being proactive and assuming responsibility for their own progress in English, successful students establish winning habits to help them in all areas of their life.
